Shoulder injuries from car accidents - seatbelt trauma, bracing, or airbag impact - are often misdiagnosed. Here is what to know and how PT helps.
Shoulder injuries are among the most underdiagnosed car accident injuries. While whiplash and back pain receive the most attention, the shoulder joint absorbs enormous force during a collision - from seatbelt compression across the chest, from bracing against the steering wheel or dashboard, or from airbag deployment. The result can be a rotator cuff tear, labrum injury, AC joint sprain, or shoulder impingement that causes months of pain if left untreated.
Dynamic Physical Therapy & Acupuncture treats shoulder injuries from car accidents at our Glendale, Van Nuys, and Woodland Hills clinics. We accept personal injury medical liens - you pay nothing during treatment. Fees are collected from your settlement.
How Car Accidents Cause Shoulder Injuries
- Seatbelt trauma: the shoulder belt locks during impact and compresses the anterior shoulder, straining the AC joint and anterior capsule
- Bracing the steering wheel: outstretched arms at impact transmit force through the shoulder joint, stressing the rotator cuff and labrum
- Airbag deployment: the explosive force of the airbag at close range can bruise, strain, or dislocate the shoulder
- Side-impact collisions: direct trauma to the lateral shoulder from door intrusion or window glass
- Rollover accidents: the shoulder may be thrown against the window, door, or B-pillar
Common Shoulder Injuries from Car Accidents
Rotator Cuff Tear
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons stabilizing the shoulder joint. A traumatic force during a collision can partially or fully tear one or more tendons, causing deep shoulder pain, weakness, and difficulty lifting the arm. Partial tears are often missed on initial imaging.
AC Joint Sprain
The acromioclavicular joint connects the collarbone to the shoulder blade. Seatbelt force can sprain or separate this joint, producing pain at the top of the shoulder that worsens when reaching across the body.
Shoulder Impingement
Post-accident inflammation in the subacromial space can cause the rotator cuff tendons to be pinched when raising the arm, producing a sharp, catching pain with overhead movements.
Do Not Wait
Untreated rotator cuff injuries can progress from partial tears to complete tears, significantly increasing recovery time and potentially requiring surgery. Early physical therapy often prevents surgical intervention.
Physical Therapy Treatment for Post-Accident Shoulder Pain
- Manual therapy: glenohumeral joint mobilization, soft tissue work, and myofascial release to restore range of motion
- Rotator cuff strengthening: progressive exercise targeting supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis
- Scapular stabilization: retraining the serratus anterior and lower trapezius for proper shoulder mechanics
- Dry needling: deactivating trigger points in the posterior rotator cuff and periscapular muscles
- Modalities: ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and cold therapy to reduce inflammation
- Functional rehabilitation: sport- and work-specific movements to prepare for full return to daily activities
Lien-Based Care - No Upfront Cost
We accept personal injury medical liens at all three clinics. This means accident victims in California receive expert shoulder rehabilitation immediately, without any payment due until their legal case resolves. We also prepare detailed injury documentation and final narratives for your attorney.
