Dashboard knee, ligament sprains, and meniscal tears from car accidents cause lasting disability if untreated. Learn how physical therapy addresses each injury type under personal injury lien.
Knee injuries from car accidents are among the most functionally limiting post-collision diagnoses. Unlike neck and back pain - which often improve with rest - knee injuries frequently worsen with daily activity because the knee is a weight-bearing joint involved in every step, stair climb, and car entry. Yet knee injuries receive far less attention in the immediate aftermath of a collision, often being dismissed as bruising or minor soreness.
At Dynamic Physical Therapy & Acupuncture, we treat post-accident knee injuries at our Glendale, Van Nuys, and Woodland Hills clinics. We accept personal injury medical liens - no upfront cost, same-day evaluations available.
Dashboard Knee Syndrome
Dashboard knee syndrome describes the pattern of knee injuries caused when a front-seat occupant slides forward during a frontal collision and strikes the knee against the dashboard. The forces involved are substantial even at moderate speeds. The result can include PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) sprain or tear, patellar contusion or fracture, retropatellar cartilage damage, meniscal injury from compression and rotation, and tibial plateau bruising or fracture in severe impacts. Many of these injuries are not visible on standard X-rays and require MRI for accurate diagnosis - something Dynamic PT can help you coordinate through your attorney's referral network.
ACL, MCL, and Lateral Ligament Sprains from Car Accidents
Ligament sprains around the knee occur when the foot is planted and a lateral or rotational force hits the lower extremity during a side-impact collision. The MCL (medial collateral ligament) on the inner knee and the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in the center of the joint are the most commonly injured. Symptoms include instability (the knee giving way), swelling, and pain with pivoting or direction changes. The majority of Grade I and Grade II MCL and ACL injuries respond well to physical therapy without surgery.
Meniscal Tears After a Car Accident
The menisci are two C-shaped cartilage pads that act as shock absorbers between the femur and tibia. A twisting force during impact, or compression from a direct blow, can tear one or both menisci. Symptoms include joint line pain, swelling, locking or clicking, and difficulty fully straightening the knee. Conservative physical therapy is the first-line treatment for most meniscal tears in accident victims, particularly for the posterior horn of the medial meniscus where blood supply supports some healing.
Important
If your knee locks up (cannot be fully straightened), has significant giving-way instability, or is severely swollen after a car accident, seek orthopedic evaluation to rule out a complete ACL tear or displaced meniscal bucket handle tear. Dynamic PT can coordinate emergency orthopedic referrals on lien.
Physical Therapy for Post-Accident Knee Injuries

- Quadriceps and hamstring strengthening to protect the healing ligament or meniscus
- Patellofemoral rehabilitation for kneecap pain and tracking dysfunction
- Balance and proprioception training to prevent re-injury
